Today’s Modern Healthcare System: DO WE HAVE A PROBLEM?
We've been raised to think that when we get sick we can turn to our state-of-the-art healthcare system and cutting edge pharmaceutical industry and get what we need to be returned to good health.
Here are some facts that may change that point of view.
When it comes to emergency medicine and trauma care, modern medicine and the US healthcare system are rated as among the top in the world. But when it comes to the care of chronic illness and disease, as well as overall mortality, did you know that the US rates well behind most European countries and some countries in Africa and Asia. In fact, according the World Health Organization, the US ranks 42nd! For comparisons here are some other rankings: Germany ranks 25. Australia ranks 32. Japan ranked 10 and North Korea was 167! The number one country for disease and illness care in the world was France.
Despite having the costliest health care system in the world, another study showed the United States ranks last compared with five other affluent countries on measures of quality, access, efficiency, equity, and outcomes, according to a Commonwealth Fund report that analyzes international health policy surveys.
Old problems are getting worse too. Many degenerative health problems are on the rise, reaching epidemic proportions: blood sugar issues, heart conditions, inflammatory issues, just to name a few. Auto-immune issues are on the rise too, despite all our modern techniques and medicines. In fact, in some cases, medicine is the problem. For example, the over-use of anti-biotics has created a situation in which "super-bugs" now exist that are resistant to any known anti-biotics and are therefore lethal. Viral issues that are directly related to immune function plague many parts of the world, including the US. The last few years has seen the recall of many pharmaceutical drugs that were "cleared" by the FDA as safe, and then found to cause harm and even death in some cases. In many cases, the side effects from synthetic drugs can be worse than the issue it is meant to help.
Another alarming set of statistics is provided by JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association.
Annual Death Toll From Medical Error, Treatment or Exposure:
- 106,000 – Adverse Drug Reactions
- 88,000 – Infections in Hospital
- 69,136 – Unnecessary Surgery and Procedures
- 98,000 – Medical Errors in Hospital
- 115,000 - Bedsores
- 108,800 - Malnutrition
- 199,000 – Deaths from same causes of outpatient care
783,936 – ANNUAL DEATHS
Information like this makes us ask the question: Do we have a "healthcare" system, or do we have a "sick care" system? Do we really have "health" insurance, or just "free sickness with a co-pay?" And if our healthcare system is responsible for so many deaths each year, is it part of the solution or DO WE HAVE A PROBLEM? Are you willing to wait to be sick, then enter the system and hope for the best? Or is it time for you, like millions of others who are looking for and have found alternatives, to take charge of your health and do what you can to support your body’s natural ability to maintain optimal health?
